Updating a fireplace

Refer to the owner's manual for complete clearance requirements and specifications.When a hearth is in good condition, it's best to keep it and work it into the new design.To ensure the hearth remains unharmed during the remodel, protect it with heavy-duty drop cloths and/or furniture blankets.We are looking to change up our fireplace - but I don't know if the ugly gold piece around the insert is removable or even what is behind it!Our plan is to paint the brick - bottom line - I don't like the gold piece framing the fireplace and I don't know if I need to replace it with something else, or if I can just take it off - my hope is there is brick behind it!
